Let’s meet the team!
We have over 40 staff members who work for Helicon, with a large majority forming part of our capture team. Our capture team is responsible for the safety and welfare of the animals. Our team sets up a capture boma in order to trap a large number of animals into a small space as they run toward the trucks for loading. In doing this, we make use of a helicopter to gather animals together. Curtains are suspended from a high cable between the capture funnel and the capture area, and between the capture area and the holding area. Our curtains are camouflaged in the bushveld. These curtains can be opened and closed, and there is also a short curtain between the holding area and the loading funnel. The holding area is used to hold the animals temporarily and to give them a chance to rest and cool off. Once the animals are calm, they are loaded onto the trucks, ranging from at least three compartments to eight compartments. Our smallest truck can load 60 springbuck, and our largest truck can load 140. This is of course a small sized animal. When it comes to large animals, such as blue wildebeest, our smallest truck can load 24, whereas our biggest truck can load 60. Our method of catching causes little disturbance and there is limited physical handling of animals, resulting in less stress. It also allows us to capture a large variety of wildlife at a time.
